In a dramatic turn of events, the Constitutional Court of Romania has annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections just two days before the scheduled runoff. The race was poised to pit the pro-Russian far-right candidate Călin Georgescu against the pro-European liberal contender Elena Lasco. The reports highlighted the extensive use of TikTok accounts to amplify Georgescu’s popularity and the creation of artificial subscriber bases to promote his agenda.
Georgescu’s unexpected success in the first round shocked political observers and the electorate alike. Initially considered a fringe candidate, Georgescu had ranked fifth or sixth in pre-election polling. His rise, attributed to social media campaigns, earned him the moniker “TikTok candidate.” The revelations of external interference have further deepened suspicions surrounding his candidacy.
